With the aim to enhance the economic advantages between Europe and the Mediterranean, the coordinator of the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME), Anwar Zibaoui and Joan Amorós, coordinator of Promotion du Grand Axe Ferroviaire de marchandises Scandinavie-Rhin-Rhône-Méditerranée Occidentale (FERRMED) met on the 30th of March 2016 in Barcelona in order to discuss the common goals and working areas they have.
One of the goals is the enhancement of the transport modes around the Mediterranean Sea, namely the planned extension of the Mediterranean Corridor and a Euro-Mediterranean Rail Network. This would lead to economic advantages as well as to an approximation between Europe and the Mediterranean region.
As the two organizations have worked together before, they are keen on further joint projects in the region, such as the mentioned extension of the railway system. ASCAME stressed the fact that they appreciate the work of FERRMED and pointed out that there is a strong need for more interaction and integrity between Europe and the Eastern and Southern Mediterranean. By strengthening the trade and transportation situation of the Mediterranean area would automatically lead to a growth and development of its economy.
Lastly, ASCAME assured their support and presence for the FERRMED event “Development of the FERRMED great railway axis and the rise of a western Mediterranean new core area” which will be held on 13th April 2016 in Malaga, Spain. ASCAME is looking forward to the event as this meets their priority of an increased use of multimodal transportation.
